October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. This staggering statistic resonated deeply with the members of the Total Beauty blog community, many of whom have been personally touched by the disease. In the spirit of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, TotalBeauty.com, in partnership with its network of beauty blogs, is hosting a month-long initiative that integrates breast cancer awareness, breast cancer research fundraising and beauty giveaways to engage women in the quest for a cure.

Total Beauty - Total Cure is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection, and arming women with the knowledge they need to take control of their health, bringing us one step closer to a world without breast cancer.

"As a hereditary breast cancer survivor, I know the importance of early detection. Research is the key to increasing survivorship and finding a cure. I am more optimistic than ever that it's possible. I am thrilled that the beauty bloggers are joining together to do their part," remarks beauty blogger, Debbi O’Shea.

Breast cancer information, screening guidelines, and links to available resources will be integrated throughout the campaign. The Total Beauty blog community will engage its readership through daily giveaways that require entrants to answer breast cancer trivia, making the contests dually educational and fun. Giveaways will also be hosted on Total Beauty - Total Cure pages on Facebook and MySpace; throughout the month of October, all visitors who become a "friend" of the pages will be entered in a drawing to win a bounty of beauty products. Giveaway sponsors include Anastasia Beverly Hills, Benefit, Cargo, Clarisonic, Jurlique, L’Oreal Paris, NARS, Stila and Tarte. This unique collaboration of beauty bloggers, beauty brands and Total Beauty is one to show a united voice of strength and hope that, someday soon, we will close in on a cure to breast cancer.

Let's make breast cancer something we will all "live without" in the very near future.

A Little Extra Protection is A Good Thing

For my recent shore vacation (the "shore" is what we southeast Pennsylvanians and southern New Jerseyans call the "beach") I purchased St. Ives Elements Protective Cleanser with SPF 10. This is a facial cleanser that, when you wash the cleanser off your face, is supposed to leave behind a layer of SPF 10 protection. Pretty cool, huh? Now, some people say this will help them skip a pesky extra step in their morning skincare routine by eliminating the application of SPF. I understand how one could feel this way, but c'mon ladies. SPF 10? From a cleanser you just washed off your face? I mean, really, how much protection can that really give you? Now, I'm not denying that the product does what it says, but we should all know by now that you need a lot higher SPF protection on your delicate face than a 10.My dermatologist said nothing less than 30 would do, and she herself wore, like, 75 (and she was probably late 40's/early 50's and her skin was porcelai...

Vaseline Cocoa Butter Vitalizing Gel Body Oil

So which is it - a gel or body oil? Well, it is both, and I like it! I found this today when I stopped at Wal-Mart to find some replacement cushions for my patio furniture, and immediately had to have it (sadly, I did not get any cushions). It says "new" on the bottle, but looks like maybe it came out some time last year, based on customer reviews at Amazon, however, it's new to me! I thought it had to be brand new because it just seems like summer-in-a-bottle. It has that rich, earthy smell of cocoa butter products, but I also think I caught a very slight whiff of a pretty floral note, like lilacs, which I love, and at the same time, it smells like yummy buttercream frosting! The key ingredients include Brazilian Nut Oil (supposed to be a great moisture barrier, keeping your skin hydrated, and possesses antioxidant properties) and Sweet Almond Oil (gives your skin a pretty glow and restores moisture). To be honest, I don't see cocoa butter listed in the ingredients ...
