My hubbie is bringing his new MacBook, so hopefully I'll be able to do some posting - not sure if we'll be able to get a wireless signal anywhere, but we'll try. I have some new beach beauty products I'm bringing along with me, so if I can't post from LBI, I'll talk at cha next week! Here's a pic of our rental home...oceanfront property! Only wish I owned it...sigh...

InStyle, April '08: Part II

The title of this post is kind of a misnomer, because what I'm writing about is actually found in the June 08 issue of InStyle. But, as it directly relates to the InStyle, April '08: Part I post, that's how it's gonna be. In the Part I post, I stated that I was going to write to InStyle because I HAD to know what Renee Zellweger's pretty, pretty, pretty lipcolor was. Well, they answered! However, they did not print my personal letter, but, rather, gave out the info in their Where Can I Find... section. Which, that's cool. They didn't have to print my letter. I mean, what I wanted was the info, right? I didn't need to see my name in black-and-white on the fine pages of InStyle magazine. No big deal. Ok, so that's the well-mannered gracious me talking. Now here's the real me: damn, damn, damn, why couldn't they have just printed my letter?! How cool would it have been for me to be able to tell all my buds - hey, there's my name in a major magazine. Now, I realize it would have just been for a letter, not an article that I wrote, or one that had been written about me (ok, that's a stre-e-e-tch, but this is my blog and I can write whatever I want, no matter how preposterous). But still. It would've been fabulous. Yes, indeedy, it would have.

ANYWAY...the answer to my lipcolor question from InStyle is as follows: Ms. Zellweger is wearing a Paula Dorf lip liner in Goddess with Laura Mercier Creme Lip Colour in Discretion. Based on the picture of the lipstick, either the cover shot of Renee was touched up and her lips made a little brighter, or the picture of the Laura Mercier lipstick is not color-corrected because it looks very nude/beige, while Renee's lips looked coral (to me at least - maybe I need to be color- corrected). And, as a matter of fact, I just checked out the LM website where the shade is described as beige-nude-creme, so I'm guessing Renee's lips were "coral-ized". Guess I'll have to make a trip to Nordstrom (oh, darn) to check out the Laura Mercier lip colour and see for myself just what it looks like in real life.

Hooray for Hollywood!

Hollywood arrived in my little town of West Chester, Pennsylvania last night in the forms of Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson!! No lie. They were here filming scenes for the upcoming movie "Marley & Me." Though I did not take the pictures you see here (they are amateur photos, just not mine - my camera died on me, plus, it was dark and we were warned against using flashes, so the few pics I did take did not come out), I did see both Jen and Owen. Owen walked right past me on the sidewalk on the way back to his trailer, and Jen I really only got a few glimpses of. She's very tiny - not short, just very slender. I was hoping to actually get to talk to her for at least a second to ask her what beauty item she Can't Live Without, but, alas, no such luck. nevertheless, it was an interesting way to end my birthday (they filmed till sometime after midnight - I left at 12:30am - I have a 2 year-old who doesn't know the meaning of "sleeping in").

Happy Birthday to ME!!

Yup, it's my big day. Now, I have not opened the package from Sephora yet that arrived on my doorstep a couple of weeks ago (see post about that!!) That will happen tonight. But yesterday, I received in the mail a $75 Sephora gift card from my brother-in-law! That's right, I said brother-in-law. Along with a recipe book for 500 cupcakes book. How awesome of a gift is that?!

Just how will I spend my gift card? Gee, let me count the ways....

(P.S. Any single women from the Stamford/New Fairlfield area in Connecticut who would like to meet a 45 year-old single guy who is very generous with gift-giving (and all around nice guy), give me shout)

The Hunt for Bronzer Begins

Now that the warm weather is here (well, most days anyway. Today, in my neck of the woods, - shoutout to Al Roker there- is kinda nasty and chilly), I'm feeling the need to be a little less pale. Of course, no color on my cheeks will come from the actual rays of the sun, I need a faux-glow! But I have never been able to find a bronzer that I Can't Live Without. I am fair skinned, and most of the bronzers I've tried are way too dark, and end up looking muddy. Or they are too shimmery, and settle into my pores and look terrible. I did buy a Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick Compact in Pink last year hoping that for light skin the pink might me enough of a glow, but it really didn't work for me as a bronzer (maybe because it's pink and not bronze, yes, I know what you're thinking) but I thought perhaps going with a pink glow instead of the darker bronze would be a better choice. The Shimmer Brick is nice, but not what I was hoping for. I do use it occasionally for highlighting, but it's too much for me to use all over my face, since I don't have great skin - it just accents the imperfections.

Just be-boppin' around the web, checking out some of my fave sites, I found this Laura Mercier Pressed Powder that might be worth a try. According to, this pressed powder "is a silky smooth bronzing powder that glides on evenly giving the skin a soft luminosity and healthy glow without looking unnatural or heavy." Sounds great to me! The color looks light enough for fair skin, but, of course, I'll need to head to my local Nordstrom to check it out in per
son. At $32, it's a bit too steep to take a chance on ordering it online without testing it first. But I am encouraged by the color. I am heading to the grocery store this afternoon, so I'll see what my less expensive options are there, and who knows, maybe my hunt for the perfect bronzer will be over before I get to the frozen food section.

Get Yourself Screened!!

Yeah, I don't have skin cancer! I had my annual full-body check today with the dermatologist, and I had a few spots I was concerned with, but the dr. gave me a clean bill of health. Whew. But I am one of the lucky ones. I read so many articles these days about skin cancer, and since I had so many sunburns as a young girl, I'm nervous about something developing. Read these facts from Olay, who has teamed up with the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery to sponsor free screenings across the country:

Did you know...
One person dies every hour from skin cancer.
One in five Americans will develop skin cancer.
Skin cancer in women under 40 has tripled in the past 30 years.
Five sunburns double a woman's chance of getting skin cancer.
UV exposure at tanning salons is just as risky as sunbathing outside.
People with fair skin that burns rather than tans, people with red hair and people with blue eyes are at greater risk of developing skin cancer.
People who have many (extensive) freckles on their upper back are at a greater risk of developing skin cancer.
People who have a history of sunburns, especially during childhood, are at a greater risk.
The depletion of the ozone layer may be significantly affecting the incidence of melanoma.
Exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and exposure at high altitudes are the most dangerous times to be exposed to the sun.
Those with an impaired immune system — especially those who have had an organ transplant, leukemia or lymphoma — are at a greater risk of melanoma.
According to one study, the use of a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher during the first 18 years of life would cut lifetime risk of melanoma by 78%.

And it was especially nice to hear the dermatologist say she could tell right away I have been using my sunscreen, because she said my skin doesn't have that "age-y" look to it. I beg to differ, but it was nice to hear that from a dermatologist. If only I had known about the powers of sunscreen earlier. My daughter won't have wrinkles till till she's 80 with all the sunblock I slather on her!!

Go to for details and to find a free screening in your area for you and a friend. My insurance covered my visit, but even if you can't find a free screening, or even if you're not insured, please go anyway. Skin cancer is way more serious than some think. Take care of yourself!!

CEW Beauty Insider's Choice Awards

On Friday, May 2nd, CEW (Cosmetic Executive Women) announced the 2008 Beauty Award winners chosen from 600 products and 285 companies. I would love to be on that judging committee, wouldn't you?! CEW President Carlotta Jacobson appeared on the Today Show this morning, speaking about some of the winners. As usual with Today, the segment was rushed and they didn't get to the majority of the products, but here's the video anyway, and a link to all the 2008 Beauty Award Winners. I see CoverGirl LashBlast was their mass winner for eye product. Yet another reason for me to go buy it.

Giorgio Armani at Saks May 5th

For you lucky New Yorkers, Giorgio Armani is appearing at Saks Fifth Avenue on May
5th- that would be tomorrow - from 2:30-4pm to preview his Bronze Mania 2008 Collection. Meet Signori Armani when you make an Armani cosmetics purchase. The Bronze Mania collection consists of pretty much what you would think a collection called Bronze Mania would be. Lots of beautiful bronzes and golds to give you that sun-kissed look, or if you prefer, a sun-drenched look - but without having to bake in the sun! I like the sound of the Summer Foundation. In the summer, it is suggested to add bronzer to your foundation for a warmer glow, but this product eliminates that step and blends the bronzer in for you. I wish there were more shade choices - there's only two, like a one-size-fits all - fair to medium complexions and then tanned to dark complexions, which for a fair-skinned girl like me, often times the fair to medium can still be slightly dark, but I like the idea of this foundation and would like to try it out. For those of you who don't need/like foundation but still want a bronze finish, there are the Bronze Mania Skin Tints, with four shade choices. Also in the collection are some lovely lip glosses, an eye shadow palette that includes bronzing powder, and mascara that seems to have a bronze shade, but the website doesn't give a color name, only a thumbnail of the color, but it looks like the model in the above picture may be wearing it, and it looks gorgoeus. A great finishing, if unexpected, touch to a bronzed face.

Stila Free Shipping Weekend

More Free Shipping!! Stila is offering free shipping with no minimum purchase (love that!) this weekend by entering the coupon code FREENOW during checkout. Offer expires at 11:59PM Pacific on Sunday, May 4th, 2008, so get to shoppin' ladies. Unfortunately for me, the eyeshadow duo I wanted to order in Dragonfly (soft purple and soft grey) is out of stock. Lucky for me there are plenty of other pretty shades to try since - and this is hard to admit since I'm writing a beauty blog - I am in an eye shadow rut. I need something besides light brown to adorn my eyelids. I'm a brown-eyed girl with a light complexion - any suggestions?

Girl's Night In

My hubbie is away in LA on a business trip. If you can call this a business trip - he works for TV Guide, and tonight they are throwing a Sexiest Stars party. I swear, if Kiefer Sutherland is there...Anyway, it was much too difficult to find someone to stay with our daughter overnight during the week, so she and I are home, hence, the girl's night in for me. Tonight, my agenda consists of getting rid of my roots, getting rid of some blackheads, and painting my nails the prettiest pink possible! All after giving my Sammie a bath, complete with purple water and all the toys you can possibly fit in one bathtub!! The two year-old's version of Girl's Night in, I suppose.

Tonight I'll be using Nice 'n Easy Root Touch-Up. Gotta get rid of those grays. And since I've switched hairstylists, and my new guy is more expensive (though better at not giving me brassy color, so worth it), the Root Touch-Up kit gives me a few more weeks before I have to go back to the salon. It is easy to use, though I still haven't completely mastered it, but for $5-7, I can deal with a few missed grays. But practice makes perfect. The colors do blend well even if your base isn't a Nice 'n Easy color.

Next step in the beautifying process for tonight is blackhead annihilation. Bliss's Steep Clean 15-minute facial treatment is the best thing I've found so far for getting rid of, or at least greatly diminishing, ugly, nasty blackheads from my nose. Ugh. How unfair is it to have wrinkles and blackheads at the same time?! (Wow, I'm sounding pretty gorgeous right now, huh?). But this does work. Of course, if I weren't so lazy and used it on a regular basis (Bliss recommends once per week - not really so difficult), maybe I'd have less blackheads to complain about.

And to finish up my beauty-filled evening, I'm going to give myself a manicure, topping my tips with OPI's Bubble Bath. Now, I rarely get manicures or paint my nails. The polish always, always chips so quickly, usually within 24 hours, so it just seems like such a waste of time and money to me (pedicures on the hand, er, foot, ha-ha, are a different story -- soooo worth the time and money). But every once in a while, I get the urge to have pretty polished nails, and when I was browsing the nail colors at my local Ulta, this pretty pale pink caught my eye. I know, boring - pale pink, yawn - but like I said, I don't do my nails that often, so when I do, it has to be something that even if it chips the next day isn't too noticeable.

Well, I've got a lot of work ahead of me tonight. But, wait - isn't there a new episode of LOST on tonight? That Sawyer - one of TV's sexiest stars in my opinion - can't miss him. Hmmm...if I was a Type A, I could probably do all these things and watch LOST, but since I mentioned that I'm too lazy to even use a face mask once a week, maybe I should just get comfy, have a glass of wine, and grab the remote. My beauty agenda may have to wait until another night...

Have a beauty-full night, whatever you choose to do!!
