Who Cares What It Smells Like!

This is a perfume review of a perfume I have NOT smelled! Ok, I'll admit it, I really could care less about the perfume. I've fallen for the superficial - the beautiful outside, not the inside that's supposed to be what you're supposed to love. The new VAN CLEEF & ARPELS Feerie Eau de Parfum is what has caught my fancy. And I mean fancy - the bottle is so gorgeous! It really seems more like an objet d'art rather than a the means by which to contain a fragrance. The base of the bottle is like a large blue sapphire and it is topped with a sleek silver "branch" upon which a tiny silver fairy is perched. And I'm not talking Tinkerbell here. Now, I have found memories of Tinkerbell, but I am no longer five years old and am over the fairy thing. But this fairy (or "Féerie") is an elegant bit of whimsy that is all grown up. This is one of those bottles that belongs front and center on a beautiful vanity, where a woman sits in a white satin rob

Where's The Love, Sephora?

SEPHORA is having a Friends & Family sale . But I had to hear from someone else. C'mon, Sephora, aren't I one of your friends? One of your best friends??!! In fact, I'm closer to you than some of my family members - why didn't you tell me first?! Anyhoo...the deal is: 20% off!!!! Yes, 20% off your merchandise orders (which I am assuming means the offer is not valid on gift cards, though that'd be pretty awesome). Enter code FF2008 at checkout. Valid 11/6 - 11/10. And, remember, orders over $50 get free shipping. This is a great opportunity to grab some gifts for your friends & family while saving some dough. Or, you can forward the offer to your friends & family and let them save some $ while buying you something (aren't you considerate?!). And don't forget, Sephora has s a gift registry , so you can make your friends' & family's shopping for you really easy!

She Can't Live Without Her Lipstick, Either!

That's my 3 year old, Sammie. She "loves Mommy's makeup," as you can see. At least she decided on the $1.79 NYC lipstick I had floating around my makeup bag, rather than the $24 NARS Catfight lippie I just bought!

VOTE - It's a Beautiful Thing!

But I hope you vote for OBAMA!!!

It Doesn't Do It All, But It Does Enough

Recently, the sole cosmetic/beauty product store in my town went out of business. The store was called Plain Jane, and they had an amazing selection of products (it certainly was not because of me that they went out of business!). They had a closing sale: 50% off everything!! Not the time for my hubbie to be out of a job. I really could have done some damage, but I controlled myself, and bought only $85 worth of stuff (that's after the half-off discount). One of the things I picked up was BUMBLE AND BUMBLE's does it all Styling Spray. I used it a few times, thought it was ok, very light hold, but nothing special as a hairspray. Then, I read the back of the can and realized it's not really a hairspray in the traditional Aqua Net sense. Before styling, you are instructed to hold about 10 inches away from hair and spray in fluid, even strokes; when using with heat tools, separate hair into sections and mist each just prior to contact. So I did that before using my hot rollers,

Spook-tacular Lips

Ok, for many (including me) this might seem like a pretty scary beauty item, but it seems that black is the new red. Check out the limited-edition YSL Gloss Pur Black . It's out of stock on the YSL site, but Neiman Marcus still has it. It's $28. And while for many of us (again, speaking mostly for myself!), the idea of black lipgloss is quite daunting, the advice I've heard is too layer it over a red lipcolor to add depth and shine, so as to not end up looking goth. Happy Halloween, my pretties!

Oh, Happy Day!!

Today, the mailman delivered to me something fabulous!! It was my THREE CUSTOM COLOR SPECIALISTS ' custom-created lipsticks!! I wrote a post on October 1st titled "Really, I Can't Live Without My Lipstick" about the great Three Custom Color Specialists and how I order from them a shade called Once Bitten based on a sample of lipstick from the Diane von Furstenberg beauty line developed few years ago that was discontinued (boo-hoo). I recently ordered four (yup, 4!!!) new tubes (you get a discount if you order more than two, plus a $10 discount when you re-order, so it was worth it). And I desperately needed them - or at least one - I was all out. The only thing good about being out of your go-to-everyday lippie is that it forces you to find something else to wear until those precious tubes of colored happiness arrive in your mailbox. I found in my lipstick bin (yes - my own personal lipstick bin) one named True Mauve from Victoria's Secret that I was really hap

Dolce & Gabbana - The One (For Me)

Oh my god - how do I even begin to convey how much I looooooooooooove this perfume? DOLCE & GABBANA's The One smells so good that I wanted it after smelling it on of those magazine strips. And it does not disappoint in the bottle, or the body lotion, that came in the set my hubbie get for me, and that also included a roll-on vial - great for traveling. As described by DOLCE & GABBANA: The top notes radiate a vibrant luminosity, with a sun-touched citrus blend of bergamot and mandarin. Warm fruity notes of luscious lychee and succulent peach add to the delight. The passionate heart evokes an exploding femininity, with an opulent floral soul comprised of madonna lily, muguet and jasmine, creating a distinct, audacious signature. An unexpected hint of plum glows as the base finally blooms with the luscious allure of precious vetyver, accentuated with the lasting warmth of vanilla and sweetened ambery-musk tones . Did you get all that? I'm sure it really does have all thos

Can't Live Without Featured Product!!!

There is a creamy pink pencil from BENEFIT called Eye Bright that I Can't Live Without! You see, I have the circles under my eyes that will not go away no matter what. Eight hours of sleep? Still there. Fancy eye creams? Still there. Expensive undereye concealers? Still there. According to my dermatologist, these dark circles are oh-so-lovingly referred to as "tear troughs," and injectible fillers are pretty much the only way to get rid of them (ouch). However, for the needle-shy and those feeling the pinch of these troubling economic times we are living in, Eye Bright is a solution that only costs $20, so it doesn't hurt your wallet or your face. I draw a pink line or two on the dark circles/indentions under my eyes and in the inner corners of my eyes where darkness lurks, and, ouila - instant brightness! It truly helps. It can also be used as a highlighter on the brow bone. I still use regular concealer under my eyes, but the Eye Bright goes right on those rea

Prescriptives is My Friend!!!

Check out this amazing sale from PRESCRIPTIVES ! You know cosmetics NEVER go on sale at department stores, but Prescriptives is having a Friends & Family Event online. And not just any ol ' sale -- 25% off AND free shipping (which you know I looooove my free shipping). Just enter the promo code FRIEND8 at checkout for the FREE SHIPPING!!! This ends tomorrow, 10/24 at 11:59pm est, so don't dilly-dally. I need to stock up on my foundation - Virtual Matte Oil-Control Makeup w/SPF 15 . If you need coverage, this gives it to you, but it's not terribly heavy. It really evens out your skin.

But What If You Live In A Blue State?

Stila has come out with a lipstick called Rock the Vote Red in honor of this year's Presidential Election. See, you can be civic-minded AND pretty, too! A percentage of sales of this highly-qualified lipstick will go to Rock The Vote . And if you haven't registered to vote - well, you might be too late (please check your state's registration guidelines), but you could always volunteer to make phone calls or hand out flyers or at least slap a bumper sticker on your car for the candidate you support. Do something!! Like buy a lipstick, perhaps?! And you know what? Since this is my blog, I want to show my support for Barack Obama ! And my fellow Univ. of Delaware alum Joe Biden (no, we didn't attend at the same time, just went to the same school- many years apart). Go Dems! But I will say, Sarah Palin gets my vote for best lip color and overall makeup - any ideas what she's got going on there in terms of brands and shades?

It's Here: Estee LauderTurboLash Mascara is Now In Stock

The new "it" product is now in stock. Estee Lauder's TurboLash , that is. Are you going to try this vibrating mascara?? I'm not sure if I am or not. I just can't decide if it's really worth the $30, or if it's just a gimmick. From esteelauder.com : It's the world's first "turbo-charged" motion mascara with a vibrating brush. An innovation of design and engineering. Auto-powered, patent pending*, and precision-engineered to achieve lash effects you never thought possible. Turn on the power and the brush does the rest. Feel the buzz, as the gently vibrating LashSonic Brush™ with micro-pulse bristles works its magic, moving rapidly through lashes. Continuously separates and saturates lashes with a rapid release gel formula. Finds lashes you didn't even know you had (don't all mascaras claim that?!) and coats them instantly and perfectly. Creates the ideal lash effect—maximum volume, length, curl and separation—all at once. The mo

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. This staggering statistic resonated deeply with the members of the Total Beauty blog community, many of whom have been personally touched by the disease. In the spirit of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, TotalBeauty.com, in partnership with its network of beauty blogs, is hosting a month-long initiative that integrates breast cancer awareness, breast cancer research fundraising and beauty giveaways to engage women in the quest for a cure. Total Beauty - Total Cure is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection, and arming women with the knowledge they need to take control of their health, bringing us one step closer to a world without breast cancer. "As a hereditary breast cancer survivor, I know the importance of early detection. Research is the key to increasing survivorship and finding a cure. I am more optimistic than ever that it's possible. I am thrilled th

Really, I "Can't Live Without My Lipstick"!

The fact that I call my beauty blog "Can't Live Without My Lipstick", I thought I would write about finding out that my favorite, used-everyday lipstick was discontinued, and thinking "how will I live without my lipstick??!!" I'm sure you all can feel my pain having discovered at some point that your favorite lipstick, or eyeshadow, fragrance, body lotion, whatever - name your beauty poison -had been eliminated! My well-loved but doomed lipstick was from Diane von Furstenberg's makeup line that she had a couple of years ago for about, oh, ten minutes. She still has a few beauty items, but not the full line. My pick was a lipstick called Once Bitten. It was a great pinky-beige (yes, the favorite neutral lip color, boring, I know, but we all want it, right?), but it had a slight sheen, so it wasn't heavy and matte, but also not sheer where it would disappear after half-an-hour, and it just seemed to be the closest to a perfect everyday lipstick I have

A Delicious Night's Sleep

I stopped into Bath & Body Works the other day to check out their new line, Shea Cashmere, but what I ended up loving was from their Aromatherapy line, something called Sleep - Warm Milk & Honey. In a deep cobalt blue bottle with little white stars, the body lotion was a yummy smelling blend of cinnamon and cloves, both from essential oils. The combination really does smell like some concoction that your grandmother might have whipped up on a cold night to help you fall asleep (now, I've never actually had warm milk, but if it tastes anything like how this stuff smells, bring me a glass!). Now, I cannot attest to whether it helps you sleep better because as much as I loved the fragrance, times are lean and I cannot afford to buy every beauty/skincare/bodycare product I fall in love with (I would be bankrupt for sure if I did), but I hope it will go on sale during one of B&BW's awesome sales. Or I will have to wait and put it on my Christmas list. Here's to sweet

Spanx 8th Anniversary Sale!

I got this special offer from someone I used to work with who now works at Spanx (awesome gig, right?!). It's good to know people at cool companies! Especially a company that wants to make your rear look fab. Just in case the print is a little too small, the offer is 30% off at spanx.com when you enter the promo code spanxanniversary thru Sept. 14th.

The Pushy Salesperson - Chillax.

Ok, so I stop at the mall today and head to the Prescriptives counter at Macy's to get my foundation (Prescriptives Virtual Matte in Fresh Camellia). After wandering around the counter for several minutes, someone finally comes to assist me. I make the transaction very easy, handing her the bottle in the exact color I need, thinking I will be out of here in a flash. Of course, normally, I'd want to check everything out, look at new colors, etc., but not this morning. Anyway, in the course of about a minute, this girl tried to sell me on just about everything, and left me feeling really crappy. She attempted to pawn off on me: serum, primer, powder, moisturizer, different foundation, a brush, new colors of makeup, and yet she forgot my free gift (which just to make my experience more annoying, there was supposed to be a choice of color palette for the GWP and all that was left was the color palette I did not prefer). Now, I know these salespeople work on commission, and I, pers

Kat Von D Rockin' Eyeshadows

Check out these smokin' new eyeshadows shades from Kat Von D, a Sephora limited edition. Called Rock n' Roll Eyeshadow Duo , one side is a glittery formulation and the other is a satin shade. And as fierce as the color choices are, I am equally rocked by the names Ms. Von D has given these duos. Groupie, Motorhead, Air Guitar - oh my! But my faves are in honor of Kat's rocker boyfriend, and one of my all-time favorite metal hotties - Nikki Sixx : Livewire and Sixxshooter (the killer smoky duo pictured above). Gone on, show off your Wild Side with these new eyeshadows. Rock n' Roll is beautiful.

I Want, I Want, I Want!

I love getting the Bliss catalog . I wish I could order everything in it - their fun product descriptions convince me I need every single item. Alas, no can do. But I still love when that catalog appears in my mailbox, like it did today. And in it, I found something that I may have to get. Lately, I have been admirably deep conditioning my hair on a weekly basis (before, it was like once every six months. Not very helpful.). Still, I do not have the long, shiny, lustrous locks I envy on others (think Kristin Davis, Penelope Cruz). A new item in the Bliss catalog might just help me achieve my goal. It's called the Hair Therapy Wrap . It's a terry wrap in which you insert three gel packs, place in the microwave for 80 seconds, and then put on your head for up to 30 minutes to make your conditioner even more effective by adding penetrating heat! Sweet.

Bumble and bumble Hair Powder

For Labor Day, I thought I'd write about a product that can make your hair care routine decidedly less labor-intensive! I've been trying to find a dry shampoo for months now, and have been disappointed until now. This Bumble and bumble Hair Powder (which is actually an aerosol spray) is the one I've been looking for. I have long hair and a 3 year old. I do not have time everyday (or even every other day) to wash and style my hair. Hence, the use of the dry shampoo to dry cleanse my hair, getting rid of that greasiness that can hit the roots and sides (especially noticeable since I pull my hair into the mommy ponytail at least 5 days a week). Unlike other dry shampoos I've tried, this comes in colors to match your hair color! Genius. I first tried Oscar Blandi's version, and while it smelled of lemony deliciousness, as a brunette, the white spray left my hair a dusty, powdery mess, with a gray haze, even after multiple brush-outs. And I didn't detect an

The "Bzz" on Max Factor

NO, I didn't misspell Bzz -- that's how it's spelled according to BzzAgent.com , the leading word-of-mouth media network. What that means is BzzAgent is hired by companies who want to get the word out about their product or service and gets people like me (a "BzzAgent") to spread the word after receiving samples of said product. I recently received samples (actually, full-size products) of some items from the revamped Max Factor line. I was pretty darn excited -- in the past I've gotten air freshener and coupons for free yogurt from BzzAgent, which was cool -- I love free anything, but to get free makeup ?! AWESOME! This is what I received in my BzzKit: MAX Factor ColorGenius Blush, Volume Couture Mascara, a Blush Brush, and Lipfinity Lustres Lip Color. I have tried the first three items. I have not tried the lip color yet only because it's really not my shade (based on the color in the tube. Since it is supposed to last for up to 16 hours and I'm p

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler Rant - No Refill Pads For You!

Recently, I ran out of pads for my Shu Uemura eyelash curler . You know, the curler that it seems every makeup artist and beauty guru recommends. And for good reason - it gives great curl. So I went on a mission to obtain more curler pads, only to find out, you can't get replacement pads, other than the one refill pad that comes with the curler when you buy it. What I'm saying here is that in order to get new pads for your Shu Uemura curler, you have to BUY another Shu Uemura eyelash curler!! I was astounded! In fact, on the Sephora website , it states that you should replace the pas every three months (I'm down with that, they start to crack, and that's bad for your eyelashes), and you should replace the curler itself EVERY SIX MONTHS! Are you kidding me?! I have read numerous articles by makeup artists who say that they have had their beloved SU eyelash curler for years. So where do they get refill pads? And I can't believe that the SU is so shoddily made that it

Beauty on eBay

I love a beauty bargain (hence, all my Free Shipping posts), and as with other types of items, you can try to get a good deal on beauty products on good ol' eBay . Now, sometimes, you don't get such a good deal. I just thought this was interesting -- a few posts back, I wrote about a cool mascara sampler from Sephora called The Lash Stash . Looking on eBay under the search word "Sephora," I found someone auctioning off The Lash Stash set. On the Sephora website it retails for $28. This auction started at 99 cents, with very low shipping ($2.50), so I bid. The auction is ending today in a few hours and the bidding is up to $34.00!! Uh, if you go to Sephora, you can get it for $27 -- so not a good eBay bargain there! I'm guessing that these (over) bidders either 1) do not have a Sephora store near them, or 2) don't have a credit card and therefore, can't purchase from Sephora.com and need to use PayPal and have the purchase price taken from their bank accoun

You Don't Know Jacques! About Fingernails...

I hardly ever paint my fingernails. Especially dark colors. Toenails, on the other hand, ur, foot, yes. Love the pedicures. Dark, light, bright, pastel - don't care what shade. But I cannot be bothered with getting my nails painted. I try to keep them neat and filed, but it seems like such a waste of my time to sit and pay for someone else to paint my nails when they just chip the next day! ARGHHHH! It makes me angry just thinking about it. However...I was in ULTA the other day, and checked out their OPI display of new fall colors, and fingernails, look out! You are going to be painted in the near future, when the air turns cooler, and the leaves start to fall. I fell in love with OPI's nail color called You Don't Know Jacques! It is from their "La Collection de France" and this collection has many beautiful deep, rich colors perfect for fall, but You Don't Know Jacques! was my hands-down (ha-ha, get it?!) favorite. It is so different than any color I would n

Help!! I Hate my Computer!

Hi there! I have not been posting because my computer hates me back! I have lots of beauty news to report, but my computer has been acting up, making it very difficult, and very annoying, to create posts, especially if there are pictures involved. Sorry for the break in the blog, and I hope to be back up and blogging any day now!!!

Givenchy Phenomen'Eyes Mascara

OK, this new, only at Sephora Givenchy mascara called Phenomen'Eyes looks so crazy that I believe I am just going to have to buy it. It has a ROUND wand! How can it possibly work?! I-I-I-I-I am dumbfounded, practically speechless at the bizarreness of it. It looks so crazy that it really might work. According to Sephora : Givenchy Phenomen'eyes Mascara perfectly curls and separates lashes. It has a high-tech, patented round sphere at the tip of the precision wand that reaches every lash and adapts to all eye shapes. The result? A beautifully fanned-out panoramic effect, holding the curve of your lashes perfectly in place. Luckily, I have a Sephora gift card, because I truly don't think I could justify spending (my) money on this crazy-looking mascara. Personally, I see mascara ending up everywhere except my lashes. Bobbi Brown's NEW Mauve Collection

Ooooh- these colors in Bobbi Brown's new fall collection called The Mauve Collection (ok, not a very original name, but very succinct) are right up my alley. I love mauves, heather greys and pinkey-browns. I think they are really flattering on just about everyone and this collection looks like it has something for everyone. "Infused with hints of purple, grey and brown, mauve makeup is a cool neutral that's very wearable."- Bobbi Brown Check out the super pretty limited-edition Mauve Face Palette - suddenly I feel like donning a turtleneck and some tights (ok, not really, because I looooooove summer, but these fall colors are fantastic). It comes with three eyeshadows, three lip colors and one blush. Also included in the collection are two new lip shades - Heather Mauve and Pale Mauve, both in the creamy, semi-matte formulation. There are two new Shimmer Glosses, too: limited-edition Black Pearl and Iced Mauve, to wear alone or over lipstick, and a non-shimmering,

Makeup Tip for Curled Eyelash Challenged

You all might know this already, but somehow this beauty tidbit has alluded me all these years: If you have hard to curl eyelashes, curl first with your eyelash curler and then apply waterproof mascara! I recently bought CoverGirl LashBlast mascara and accidentally bought the waterproof version. I was ready to return it to the store, but I thought, hey, it's summer. There will be swimming, and other water-related activities, maybe it's a good idea to have at least one waterproof mascara in my arsenal of lash enhancers. While I was not overwhelmed by LashBlast, and was very disappointed by not being overwhelmed, I was astounded by the fact that my eyelashes remained curled ALL DAY after applying this mascara. I did use an eyelash curler first, and then applied the mascara. Usually after I apply mascara, even after using a curler first, my eyelashes uncurl, maybe not going all the way back to straight, but definitely not holding the curl made by the curler. This even happened wi

A Little Extra Protection is A Good Thing

For my recent shore vacation (the "shore" is what we southeast Pennsylvanians and southern New Jerseyans call the "beach") I purchased St. Ives Elements Protective Cleanser with SPF 10. This is a facial cleanser that, when you wash the cleanser off your face, is supposed to leave behind a layer of SPF 10 protection. Pretty cool, huh? Now, some people say this will help them skip a pesky extra step in their morning skincare routine by eliminating the application of SPF. I understand how one could feel this way, but c'mon ladies. SPF 10? From a cleanser you just washed off your face? I mean, really, how much protection can that really give you? Now, I'm not denying that the product does what it says, but we should all know by now that you need a lot higher SPF protection on your delicate face than a 10.My dermatologist said nothing less than 30 would do, and she herself wore, like, 75 (and she was probably late 40's/early 50's and her skin was porcelai

Gee, if they only had free shipping, too! Ok, I shouldn't be greedy...

Can She BE More Beautiful?!

Ok, we all know Angelina is gorgeous. Well, except for that moron Donald Trump, but then again, he goes out in public with that hair of his. 'Nuf said. Anyway, when I saw this cover shot of Angie, I was blown away. I think this may be the most beautiful pic I've ever seen of her - though there are many, many incredible ones to choose from. She can't take a bad one. I think maybe I like this one so much because I love big hair, and while I don't like makeup that is heavy and caked-on, I do appreciate her oh-so-glam makeup in this shot. The bold, velvety red lips against the fair skin, and the defined, but not too heavily, eyes. And the pillowy boobs, don't forget them, as if you could. So not fair that someone (who is not me!) can be that gorgeous. Oh, yeah, I want to read the article, too.
