Who Cares What It Smells Like!

This is a perfume review of a perfume I have NOT smelled! Ok, I'll admit it, I really could care less about the perfume. I've fallen for the superficial - the beautiful outside, not the inside that's supposed to be what you're supposed to love. The new VAN CLEEF & ARPELS Feerie Eau de Parfum is what has caught my fancy. And I mean fancy - the bottle is so gorgeous! It really seems more like an objet d'art rather than a the means by which to contain a fragrance. The base of the bottle is like a large blue sapphire and it is topped with a sleek silver "branch" upon which a tiny silver fairy is perched. And I'm not talking Tinkerbell here. Now, I have found memories of Tinkerbell, but I am no longer five years old and am over the fairy thing. But this fairy (or "Féerie") is an elegant bit of whimsy that is all grown up. This is one of those bottles that belongs front and center on a beautiful vanity, where a woman sits in a white satin robe and daintily applies her makeup (flawlessly, of course), and then as the last step in her beauty ritual, dabs a scent behind her ears from a stunning jewel-like flacon. Ah, how lovely - great fantasy, too bad that's not me, but I still would love to have this bottle on my dresser.

Now here's to hoping its scent is as winning as its bottle's design. Here's what the blend is:

• Top notes: Violet, Red Berries (Black Currant) Italian Mandarin.
• Middle notes: Bulgarian Rose and Egyptian Jasmine.
• Bottom Notes: Iris Butter and Vetiver.

Available at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. 3.3 oz. $150.

More Dylan Lauren News...

For those of you in NYC or Dallas, go meet Dylan Lauren, owner of Dylan's Candy Bar—the coolest candy store ever—and now creator of Re-Treat, a mouthwatering new bath and body collection. She'll be on hand to autograph Re-Treat products, satisfy your sweet tooth (yup, she's bringing candy!), and answer all your beauty questions. Stop by and indulge in yummy treats!

Sephora Times Square
November 13
12 pm - 2 pm: Personal Appearance by Dylan Lauren

Sephora Northpark Mall
November 14
2 pm - 4 pm: Personal Appearance by Dylan Lauren
P.S. I want one of those cute tanks she is wearing in the photo! Of course, I've eaten too much candy to look like she does in hers...

DYLAN LAUREN is a girl after my own heart! First, she opens a kickass candy store, and, now, she's created a line of beauty products based on scrumptious treats you might find at Dylan's Candy Bar. The line, called
Re-Treat Bath & Body, has bath & shower gels, body lotions, & creams, scrubs & exfoliants, and lip balms. These products come in such yummy "flavors" as Chocolate Cupcake, Birthday Cake Batter, Strawberry Licorice and Coconut Bon Bon. Here's a description of the products:

Body Smoothie Lotion: Shake things up and quench your skin's thirst with this light-weight hydrating lotion.

Candy Butter Cream: Who says you can't eat your cake and wear it too? This decadent topping is the icing on the cake for your skin.

Ice Cream Sugar Scrub: Had a rough day? Scrub the stress away and splurge on this calorie-free remedy!

Candy Lip Saver: A nutrient packed, mouth watering lip treatment. Lips should always be candy-luscious and sweet to kiss!

Soda Pop Shower Gel: Give your skin a sweet refreshing drink! Pop it open and energize your body with this invigorating cleanser.

The Re-Treat line can also be purchased at Sephora. I've not had the chance to sample any of these sweet treats yet, but I certainly want to. And a no-calorie treat is something that is right up my alley these days...

Where's The Love, Sephora?

SEPHORA is having a Friends & Family sale. But I had to hear from someone else. C'mon, Sephora, aren't I one of your friends? One of your best friends??!! In fact, I'm closer to you than some of my family members - why didn't you tell me first?!

Anyhoo...the deal is: 20% off!!!! Yes, 20% off your merchandise orders (which I am assuming means the offer is not valid on gift cards, though that'd be pretty awesome). Enter code FF2008 at checkout. Valid 11/6 - 11/10. And, remember, orders over $50 get free shipping.

This is a great opportunity to grab some gifts for your friends & family while saving some dough. Or, you can forward the offer to your friends & family and let them save some $ while buying you something (aren't you considerate?!). And don't forget, Sephora has s a gift registry, so you can make your friends' & family's shopping for you really easy!

She Can't Live Without Her Lipstick, Either!

That's my 3 year old, Sammie. She "loves Mommy's makeup," as you can see. At least she decided on the $1.79 NYC lipstick I had floating around my makeup bag, rather than the $24 NARS Catfight lippie I just bought!

It Doesn't Do It All, But It Does Enough

Recently, the sole cosmetic/beauty product store in my town went out of business. The store was called Plain Jane, and they had an amazing selection of products (it certainly was not because of me that they went out of business!). They had a closing sale: 50% off everything!! Not the time for my hubbie to be out of a job. I really could have done some damage, but I controlled myself, and bought only $85 worth of stuff (that's after the half-off discount). One of the things I picked up was BUMBLE AND BUMBLE's does it all Styling Spray. I used it a few times, thought it was ok, very light hold, but nothing special as a hairspray. Then, I read the back of the can and realized it's not really a hairspray in the traditional Aqua Net sense. Before styling, you are instructed to hold about 10 inches away from hair and spray in fluid, even strokes; when using with heat tools, separate hair into sections and mist each just prior to contact. So I did that before using my hot rollers, and it did the trick! I have fine hair, but a decent amount of it, and my curls tend to fall a lot sooner then I would like. But at the end of the day after using does it all, my curls were still in place and my hair had a good amount of fullness left (I'm a big hair girl, y'all - lived in Atlanta for a while). I'm still stuck on hairspray, but anything that can keep curls in without making my hair crunchy, is a great buy - I may even pay full price next time!

Spook-tacular Lips

Ok, for many (including me) this might seem like a pretty scary beauty item, but it seems that black is the new red. Check out the limited-edition YSL Gloss Pur Black. It's out of stock on the YSL site, but Neiman Marcus still has it. It's $28. And while for many of us (again, speaking mostly for myself!), the idea of black lipgloss is quite daunting, the advice I've heard is too layer it over a red lipcolor to add depth and shine, so as to not end up looking goth.
Happy Halloween, my pretties!

Oh, Happy Day!!

Today, the mailman delivered to me something fabulous!! It was my THREE CUSTOM COLOR SPECIALISTS ' custom-created lipsticks!! I wrote a post on October 1st titled "Really, I Can't Live Without My Lipstick" about the great Three Custom Color Specialists and how I order from them a shade called Once Bitten based on a sample of lipstick from the Diane von Furstenberg beauty line developed few years ago that was discontinued (boo-hoo). I recently ordered four (yup, 4!!!) new tubes (you get a discount if you order more than two, plus a $10 discount when you re-order, so it was worth it). And I desperately needed them - or at least one - I was all out. The only thing good about being out of your go-to-everyday lippie is that it forces you to find something else to wear until those precious tubes of colored happiness arrive in your mailbox. I found in my lipstick bin (yes - my own personal lipstick bin) one named True Mauve from Victoria's Secret that I was really happy to rediscover as it works perfectly with the smoky color palettes for this fall . However, I did not buy it recently, and, surprise, surprise, it seems it no longer exists. Anyhoo -- as nice as that color is, I am already sporting my custom-color creation. And all is right in my world again...Ok, well, at least in my lipstick world!

Kate's Great - Free Shipping!

Free Shipping on ANY order!! Whoo-hoo!! Thru Oct. 31st. Enter promo code FREESHIP 9 at checkout at KATE SOMERVILLE.

Dolce & Gabbana - The One (For Me)

Oh my god - how do I even begin to convey how much I looooooooooooove this perfume? DOLCE & GABBANA's The One smells so good that I wanted it after smelling it on of those magazine strips. And it does not disappoint in the bottle, or the body lotion, that came in the set my hubbie get for me, and that also included a roll-on vial - great for traveling.

As described by DOLCE & GABBANA:

The top notes radiate a vibrant luminosity, with a sun-touched citrus blend of bergamot and mandarin. Warm fruity notes of luscious lychee and succulent peach add to the delight. The passionate heart evokes an exploding femininity, with an opulent floral soul comprised of madonna lily, muguet and jasmine, creating a distinct, audacious signature. An unexpected hint of plum glows as the base finally blooms with the luscious allure of precious vetyver, accentuated with the lasting warmth of vanilla and sweetened ambery-musk tones.
Did you get all that? I'm sure it really does have all those things in there, but what I smell is mostly vanilla and musk, and not the terribly sweet vanilla that some scents have. I love the scent of vanilla, but I don't want to wear it and smell like a baked good. I swear, when I wear it, I like to smell myself! The One is a rich, deep, delicious, sexy fragrance. A little much for day, but great for a steamy night. Wear The One, and you will make it a steamy night!!

Can't Live Without Featured Product!!!

There is a creamy pink pencil from BENEFIT called Eye Bright that I Can't Live Without! You see, I have the circles under my eyes that will not go away no matter what. Eight hours of sleep? Still there. Fancy eye creams? Still there. Expensive undereye concealers? Still there. According to my dermatologist, these dark circles are oh-so-lovingly referred to as "tear troughs," and injectible fillers are pretty much the only way to get rid of them (ouch). However, for the needle-shy and those feeling the pinch of these troubling economic times we are living in, Eye Bright is a solution that only costs $20, so it doesn't hurt your wallet or your face. I draw a pink line or two on the dark circles/indentions under my eyes and in the inner corners of my eyes where darkness lurks, and, ouila - instant brightness! It truly helps. It can also be used as a highlighter on the brow bone. I still use regular concealer under my eyes, but the Eye Bright goes right on those really troublesome areas. I may get Restylane at some point, but for right now Eye Bright is right for me.

But What If You Live In A Blue State?

Stila has come out with a lipstick called Rock the Vote Red in honor of this year's Presidential Election. See, you can be civic-minded AND pretty, too! A percentage of sales of this highly-qualified lipstick will go to Rock The Vote. And if you haven't registered to vote - well, you might be too late (please check your state's registration guidelines), but you could always volunteer to make phone calls or hand out flyers or at least slap a bumper sticker on your car for the candidate you support. Do something!! Like buy a lipstick, perhaps?!

And you know what? Since this is my blog, I want to show my support for Barack Obama! And my fellow Univ. of Delaware alum Joe Biden (no, we didn't attend at the same time, just went to the same school- many years apart). Go Dems!

But I will say, Sarah Palin gets my vote for best lip color and overall makeup - any ideas what she's got going on there in terms of brands and shades?

Breast Cancer Awareness Beauty

In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I'm going PINK to feature beauty products that give back -- products whose proceeds, or some part of the proceeds, go towards supporting breast cancer research.

Let's find a cure -- and if we can stay pretty while doing that, even better!!!

It's Here: Estee LauderTurboLash Mascara is Now In Stock

The new "it" product is now in stock. Estee Lauder's TurboLash , that is. Are you going to try this vibrating mascara?? I'm not sure if I am or not. I just can't decide if it's really worth the $30, or if it's just a gimmick.

From esteelauder.com: It's the world's first "turbo-charged" motion mascara with a vibrating brush. An innovation of design and engineering. Auto-powered, patent pending*, and precision-engineered to achieve lash effects you never thought possible. Turn on the power and the brush does the rest. Feel the buzz, as the gently vibrating LashSonic Brush™ with micro-pulse bristles works its magic, moving rapidly through lashes. Continuously separates and saturates lashes with a rapid release gel formula. Finds lashes you didn't even know you had (don't all mascaras claim that?!) and coats them instantly and perfectly. Creates the ideal lash effect—maximum volume, length, curl and separation—all at once. The motion brush keeps lashes clump-free. So you can reapply several coats without heavy build-up—even refresh lashes during the day.

I would be interested to try it, but I'm not going to run out today and get it. If anyone tries it out, let me know your thoughts! Is TurboLash a new "Can't Live Without" or is it a "do without"?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. This staggering statistic resonated deeply with the members of the Total Beauty blog community, many of whom have been personally touched by the disease. In the spirit of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, TotalBeauty.com, in partnership with its network of beauty blogs, is hosting a month-long initiative that integrates breast cancer awareness, breast cancer research fundraising and beauty giveaways to engage women in the quest for a cure.

Total Beauty - Total Cure is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection, and arming women with the knowledge they need to take control of their health, bringing us one step closer to a world without breast cancer.

"As a hereditary breast cancer survivor, I know the importance of early detection. Research is the key to increasing survivorship and finding a cure. I am more optimistic than ever that it's possible. I am thrilled that the beauty bloggers are joining together to do their part," remarks beauty blogger, Debbi O’Shea.

Breast cancer information, screening guidelines, and links to available resources will be integrated throughout the campaign. The Total Beauty blog community will engage its readership through daily giveaways that require entrants to answer breast cancer trivia, making the contests dually educational and fun. Giveaways will also be hosted on Total Beauty - Total Cure pages on Facebook and MySpace; throughout the month of October, all visitors who become a "friend" of the pages will be entered in a drawing to win a bounty of beauty products. Giveaway sponsors include Anastasia Beverly Hills, Benefit, Cargo, Clarisonic, Jurlique, L’Oreal Paris, NARS, Stila and Tarte. This unique collaboration of beauty bloggers, beauty brands and Total Beauty is one to show a united voice of strength and hope that, someday soon, we will close in on a cure to breast cancer.

For more information on the Total Beauty-Total Cure campaign, please visit http://www.totalbeauty.com/.

Let's make breast cancer something we will all "live without" in the very near future.

Really, I "Can't Live Without My Lipstick"!

The fact that I call my beauty blog "Can't Live Without My Lipstick", I thought I would write about finding out that my favorite, used-everyday lipstick was discontinued, and thinking "how will I live without my lipstick??!!" I'm sure you all can feel my pain having discovered at some point that your favorite lipstick, or eyeshadow, fragrance, body lotion, whatever - name your beauty poison -had been eliminated! My well-loved but doomed lipstick was from Diane von Furstenberg's makeup line that she had a couple of years ago for about, oh, ten minutes. She still has a few beauty items, but not the full line. My pick was a lipstick called Once Bitten. It was a great pinky-beige (yes, the favorite neutral lip color, boring, I know, but we all want it, right?), but it had a slight sheen, so it wasn't heavy and matte, but also not sheer where it would disappear after half-an-hour, and it just seemed to be the closest to a perfect everyday lipstick I have ever found. (Of course, I am still looking, and probably always will for that ever elusive perfect lip color!) If I put foundation on my lips before applying, I'd get a great nude look. Conversely, lightly exfoliating my lips before application would result in a rosier hew. That's not a new trick, but it really worked with this shade. The day I went into Sephora, walked over to the DVF display to replenish my Once Bitten stock, only to find it GONE was traumatic (not to be melodramatic. I know a discontinued lipstick is not the end of the world, but y'all know, if you're reading a beauty blog, that it can really be disappointing to have a fave product taken from you). However, I had heard about this company called Three Custom Color Specialists that duplicate to the best of their ability discontinued makeup items. I decided to take a chance, and I'm happy to say it was a great experience. You can call them at or go to their website, and they'll give you instructions. I sent a Once Bitten tube with a little bit of the lipstick left in it (that was tough - what if it got lost in the mail, and then I had nothing?!) so they could match it. After a few days, I found myself anxiously awaiting the mailman to see if my new (old) lipstick had come yet. I remember it was summer, and if I was not home when the mail was delivered I'd be worried that the lipstick might melt, sitting in a hot mailbox. Luckily, no such fate fell upon my two (or was it three?) new tubes of my duplicated lipstick. Now, it isn't 100% exactly the same, but I would say it is 99.5%, so that's pretty darn fantastic, huh?! I have since ordered more - they keep your formula on file. They have a list for you to check to see if your shade has already been duplicated, saving you the trouble of sending in a sample of your makeup item. So, if you find yourself in the sad situation of having your adored lipstick vanish like I did, don't despair, Three Custom Color is there to help. You don't have to live without your lipstick after all!!

A Delicious Night's Sleep

I stopped into Bath & Body Works the other day to check out their new line, Shea Cashmere, but what I ended up loving was from their Aromatherapy line, something called Sleep - Warm Milk & Honey. In a deep cobalt blue bottle with little white stars, the body lotion was a yummy smelling blend of cinnamon and cloves, both from essential oils. The combination really does smell like some concoction that your grandmother might have whipped up on a cold night to help you fall asleep (now, I've never actually had warm milk, but if it tastes anything like how this stuff smells, bring me a glass!). Now, I cannot attest to whether it helps you sleep better because as much as I loved the fragrance, times are lean and I cannot afford to buy every beauty/skincare/bodycare product I fall in love with (I would be bankrupt for sure if I did), but I hope it will go on sale during one of B&BW's awesome sales. Or I will have to wait and put it on my Christmas list. Here's to sweet-smelling dreams...

The Pushy Salesperson - Chillax.

Ok, so I stop at the mall today and head to the Prescriptives counter at Macy's to get my foundation (Prescriptives Virtual Matte in Fresh Camellia). After wandering around the counter for several minutes, someone finally comes to assist me. I make the transaction very easy, handing her the bottle in the exact color I need, thinking I will be out of here in a flash. Of course, normally, I'd want to check everything out, look at new colors, etc., but not this morning. Anyway, in the course of about a minute, this girl tried to sell me on just about everything, and left me feeling really crappy. She attempted to pawn off on me: serum, primer, powder, moisturizer, different foundation, a brush, new colors of makeup, and yet she forgot my free gift (which just to make my experience more annoying, there was supposed to be a choice of color palette for the GWP and all that was left was the color palette I did not prefer). Now, I know these salespeople work on commission, and I, personally, would hate that, but she was so daggone pushy, I had to fight to keep my mouth shut and if I didn't need the foundation immediately, I would have left without it. Because not only was she pushy, she made me feel that what I did have on was obviously so hideous that I absolutely needed all these other products. I mean, I guess I am just a shiny, not-smooth face who has no clue how to put on makeup. I'm all for help - lots of cosmetic counter salespeople are very helpful and have great suggestions. But, jeez, you don't need to be all in my face - chill out! Be a little more subtle, for goodness' sake. Don't try and sell me the whole counter in 60 seconds. Girlfriend needs a lesson on how to sell. Or, rather, how NOT to.

Kat Von D Rockin' Eyeshadows

Check out these smokin' new eyeshadows shades from Kat Von D, a Sephora limited edition. Called Rock n' Roll Eyeshadow Duo, one side is a glittery formulation and the other is a satin shade. And as fierce as the color choices are, I am equally rocked by the names Ms. Von D has given these duos. Groupie, Motorhead, Air Guitar - oh my! But my faves are in honor of Kat's rocker boyfriend, and one of my all-time favorite metal hotties - Nikki Sixx: Livewire and Sixxshooter (the killer smoky duo pictured above).

Gone on, show off your Wild Side with these new eyeshadows. Rock n' Roll is beautiful.

I Want, I Want, I Want!

I love getting the Bliss catalog. I wish I could order everything in it - their fun product descriptions convince me I need every single item. Alas, no can do. But I still love when that catalog appears in my mailbox, like it did today. And in it, I found something that I may have to get. Lately, I have been admirably deep conditioning my hair on a weekly basis (before, it was like once every six months. Not very helpful.). Still, I do not have the long, shiny, lustrous locks I envy on others (think Kristin Davis, Penelope Cruz). A new item in the Bliss catalog might just help me achieve my goal. It's called the Hair Therapy Wrap. It's a terry wrap in which you insert three gel packs, place in the microwave for 80 seconds, and then put on your head for up to 30 minutes to make your conditioner even more effective by adding penetrating heat! Sweet.

Bumble and bumble Hair Powder

For Labor Day, I thought I'd write about a product that can make your hair care routine decidedly less labor-intensive! I've been trying to find a dry shampoo for months now, and have been disappointed until now. This Bumble and bumble Hair Powder (which is actually an aerosol spray) is the one I've been looking for. I have long hair and a 3 year old. I do not have time everyday (or even every other day) to wash and style my hair. Hence, the use of the dry shampoo to dry cleanse my hair, getting rid of that greasiness that can hit the roots and sides (especially noticeable since I pull my hair into the mommy ponytail at least 5 days a week). Unlike other dry shampoos I've tried, this comes in colors to match your hair color! Genius. I first tried Oscar Blandi's version, and while it smelled of lemony deliciousness, as a brunette, the white spray left my hair a dusty, powdery mess, with a gray haze, even after multiple brush-outs. And I didn't detect any noticeable "cleansing." I also tried Ojon's Rub-Out Dry Cleanser, once. And only once, because after the first try, it clogged up and no matter what I do to unclog it, it's not coming out. But that one also seemed to leave a whitish haze. Not good. Maybe ok for you blondes out there, but brunettes and red-heads, steer clear. The B&b one gives some volume, which I dig. I only used it on my greasy spots (eeww!) but the directions say it can be used all, which I imagine would give a pretty voluminous style. It can also be used to blend in your roots . One caveat that the owner of the store where I bought this told me that because it is colored pigment that is going on your hair, be sure to brush through thoroughly and drape on old towel over your shoulders when spraying because it will get on your clothes and pillowcase. It is a little pricey (4 oz is $34), but at least it's working for me. And, therefore, I won't be working on my hair on Labor Day thanks to Bumble and bumble Hair Powder!

The "Bzz" on Max Factor

NO, I didn't misspell Bzz -- that's how it's spelled according to BzzAgent.com, the leading word-of-mouth media network. What that means is BzzAgent is hired by companies who want to get the word out about their product or service and gets people like me (a "BzzAgent") to spread the word after receiving samples of said product. I recently received samples (actually, full-size products) of some items from the revamped Max Factor line. I was pretty darn excited -- in the past I've gotten air freshener and coupons for free yogurt from BzzAgent, which was cool -- I love free anything, but to get free makeup?! AWESOME!

This is what I received in my BzzKit: MAX Factor ColorGenius Blush, Volume Couture Mascara, a Blush Brush, and Lipfinity Lustres Lip Color. I have tried the first three items. I have not tried the lip color yet only because it's really not my shade (based on the color in the tube. Since it is supposed to last for up to 16 hours and I'm pretty sure I'm going to like the color on me, I figure I'd better test it when I know I won't have to leave the house in case it really isn't my shade at all!!). I review that later - I really want to see just how long it lasts.

The MAX Factor ColorGenius Blush I received is a three color blush that you swirl together with the Blush Brush. My blush shade(s) is Peaches (when responding to the "invitation" from BzzAgent to join the Max Factor "campaign," I had to chose between Peach and Rose shades, and I picked Peach). I like the blush, nothing extraordinary about it, but it's nice and I like that you can swirl all the colors together, or use them individually. The lightest shade is a nice highlighter, and the deeper shade allows you to, uh, contour (I know, that's such an 80's thing, but sometimes you just need to do it). I really like the Blush Brush. It is not small, like the ones that come with blush (think CoverGirl), and it's not big like a bronzer or powder brush either. It really is the perfect in-between size, and lets you apply just the right amount of blush just where you need it. It's a natural hair brush, too, and at drugstore.com, it was only $4.09!! That's an incredible price for a natural hair brush - or even a synthetic one. Or any brush. That's a good deal.

The Volume Couture Mascara is also nice, but also not extraordinary. Certainly not "couture" makeup, in my book (though it does come in Auburn, which I think could be fun to try). I thought it was funny that the Max Factor ads these days have a very dramatically made-up Carmen Electra, and yet this mascara is more one that I would use for daytime. It went on smoothly, and did give me quite a but of length (even though the name has the word Volume in it). I put my glasses on right after applying, and had to wipe the inside of my lenses off because my lashes were hitting them! I like it, but I don't see it displacing my L'Oreal Voluminous as my everyday mascara.

All in all, I'm glad I got the opportunity to try a few of the Max Factor products. While I have lots of respect for all that Max Factor has stood for in the history of makeup and Hollywood glamour, I pretty much had written this line off as "stuff my mother would have worn." I can't promise I'll be stocking up on Max Factor products, but I won't pass them by in the cosmetic aisle without looking at them anymore, either.

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler Rant - No Refill Pads For You!

Recently, I ran out of pads for my Shu Uemura eyelash curler. You know, the curler that it seems every makeup artist and beauty guru recommends. And for good reason - it gives great curl. So I went on a mission to obtain more curler pads, only to find out, you can't get replacement pads, other than the one refill pad that comes with the curler when you buy it. What I'm saying here is that in order to get new pads for your Shu Uemura curler, you have to BUY another Shu Uemura eyelash curler!! I was astounded! In fact, on the Sephora website, it states that you should replace the pas every three months (I'm down with that, they start to crack, and that's bad for your eyelashes), and you should replace the curler itself EVERY SIX MONTHS! Are you kidding me?! I have read numerous articles by makeup artists who say that they have had their beloved SU eyelash curler for years. So where do they get refill pads? And I can't believe that the SU is so shoddily made that it would have to be replaced after a mere six months of use. I mean, come on, even if you curl your lashes everyday for six months, I can't believe it would tax the curler so much that you'd need to buy a new one. Now, I get it - companies need to make money, and if they make something that lasts for 20 years, then we're only going to buy one every 20 years. No money to be made that way. But, really, Shu Uemura, you want me to by a new eyelash curler at $19 a pop every six months? I don't think so. That said, I plan on getting a Shiseido eyelash curler - at Sephora, you can buy refill pads. Though, they are temporarily out-of-stock at the moment...However, I found that you really can get almost anything on eBay, and there are people selling Shiseido eyelash curler refill pads. And here's the best part, it seems that one particular style of Shiseido refills pads will fit the Shu Uemura curler. How's about that? I am going to buy some of the Shiseido refill pads on eBay to see of they will work in the SU curler, but I'm so annoyed with SU and their obvious attempts to get my money by telling me that I should replace my curler every six months (unless someone out there can validate SU's claim), that I will still get the Shiseido curler. Shiseido also has a mini curler that I am interested in trying. Of course, that's a whole other set of refill pads to worry about!
P.S. I wanted to mention that in the course of trying to locate more pads for the SU curler, I bought a Revlon curler to tide me over. I had a $1 off coupon and got the curler for less than $3. Well, I got my money's worth. It's terrible. The pad is small and doesn't give a nice bend to your lashes. Pass this one by.

Beauty on eBay

I love a beauty bargain (hence, all my Free Shipping posts), and as with other types of items, you can try to get a good deal on beauty products on good ol' eBay. Now, sometimes, you don't get such a good deal. I just thought this was interesting -- a few posts back, I wrote about a cool mascara sampler from Sephora called The Lash Stash. Looking on eBay under the search word "Sephora," I found someone auctioning off The Lash Stash set. On the Sephora website it retails for $28. This auction started at 99 cents, with very low shipping ($2.50), so I bid. The auction is ending today in a few hours and the bidding is up to $34.00!! Uh, if you go to Sephora, you can get it for $27 -- so not a good eBay bargain there! I'm guessing that these (over) bidders either 1) do not have a Sephora store near them, or 2) don't have a credit card and therefore, can't purchase from Sephora.com and need to use PayPal and have the purchase price taken from their bank account or will send the seller a check/money order. Because darn if I can figure out why else you would bid a higher price for something from someone you don't know when you could get directly from Sephora! Unless, someone just got into a bidding frenzy and couldn't help themselves - they just have to win the auction, regardless of the price! Do you think there is an eBayers Anonymous out there?
UPDATE: The Lash Stash on eBay sold for $41 plus $2.50 shipping!! How crazy!

You Don't Know Jacques! About Fingernails...

I hardly ever paint my fingernails. Especially dark colors. Toenails, on the other hand, ur, foot, yes. Love the pedicures. Dark, light, bright, pastel - don't care what shade. But I cannot be bothered with getting my nails painted. I try to keep them neat and filed, but it seems like such a waste of my time to sit and pay for someone else to paint my nails when they just chip the next day! ARGHHHH! It makes me angry just thinking about it.

However...I was in ULTA the other day, and checked out their OPI display of new fall colors, and fingernails, look out! You are going to be painted in the near future, when the air turns cooler, and the leaves start to fall. I fell in love with OPI's nail color called You Don't Know Jacques! It is from their "La Collection de France" and this collection has many beautiful deep, rich colors perfect for fall, but You Don't Know Jacques! was my hands-down (ha-ha, get it?!) favorite. It is so different than any color I would normally consider putting on my short, stubby fingers (i.e. not pale pink). Plus, since I am not 14 and not Goth, I steer clear of the black and navy shades (works on many who are over 14, but not me). But this soft brown is so pretty - not edgy, like dark shades can be. On the OPI site, You Don't Know Jacques! is described as a "trendy taupe," but it is a little darker than taupe, but I would not consider it chocolate, though it should look very pretty with all the chocolate-inspired fall lines coming out, ex. Estee Lauder.

Get ready fingernails! You're getting a makeover this fall.

Help!! I Hate my Computer!

Hi there! I have not been posting because my computer hates me back! I have lots of beauty news to report, but my computer has been acting up, making it very difficult, and very annoying, to create posts, especially if there are pictures involved. Sorry for the break in the blog, and I hope to be back up and blogging any day now!!!

Givenchy Phenomen'Eyes Mascara

OK, this new, only at Sephora Givenchy mascara called Phenomen'Eyes looks so crazy that I believe I am just going to have to buy it. It has a ROUND wand! How can it possibly work?! I-I-I-I-I am dumbfounded, practically speechless at the bizarreness of it. It looks so crazy that it really might work.

According to Sephora:

Givenchy Phenomen'eyes Mascara perfectly curls and separates lashes. It has a high-tech, patented round sphere at the tip of the precision wand that reaches every lash and adapts to all eye shapes. The result? A beautifully fanned-out panoramic effect, holding the curve of your lashes perfectly in place.
Luckily, I have a Sephora gift card, because I truly don't think I could justify spending (my) money on this crazy-looking mascara. Personally, I see mascara ending up everywhere except my lashes. But, who knows, maybe it'll be a winner! I sincerely hope it comes with instructions...

Bobbi Brown's NEW Mauve Collection

Ooooh- these colors in Bobbi Brown's new fall collection called The Mauve Collection (ok, not a very original name, but very succinct) are right up my alley. I love mauves, heather greys and pinkey-browns. I think they are really flattering on just about everyone and this collection looks like it has something for everyone.

"Infused with hints of purple, grey and brown, mauve makeup is a cool neutral that's very wearable."- Bobbi Brown

Check out the super pretty limited-edition Mauve Face Palette - suddenly I feel like donning a turtleneck and some tights (ok, not really, because I looooooove summer, but these fall colors are fantastic). It comes with three eyeshadows, three lip colors and one blush. Also included in the collection are two new lip shades - Heather Mauve and Pale Mauve, both in the creamy, semi-matte formulation. There are two new Shimmer Glosses, too: limited-edition Black Pearl and Iced Mauve, to wear alone or over lipstick, and a non-shimmering, but high-shine gloss named, wait for it- - Mauve. There is also a new shade of Bobbi's award-winning Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner called Black Mauve Shimmer Ink - doesn't that just sound fabulous?! I can't wait to see how it looks.

Makeup Tip for Curled Eyelash Challenged

You all might know this already, but somehow this beauty tidbit has alluded me all these years: If you have hard to curl eyelashes, curl first with your eyelash curler and then apply waterproof mascara! I recently bought CoverGirl LashBlast mascara and accidentally bought the waterproof version. I was ready to return it to the store, but I thought, hey, it's summer. There will be swimming, and other water-related activities, maybe it's a good idea to have at least one waterproof mascara in my arsenal of lash enhancers. While I was not overwhelmed by LashBlast, and was very disappointed by not being overwhelmed, I was astounded by the fact that my eyelashes remained curled ALL DAY after applying this mascara. I did use an eyelash curler first, and then applied the mascara. Usually after I apply mascara, even after using a curler first, my eyelashes uncurl, maybe not going all the way back to straight, but definitely not holding the curl made by the curler. This even happened with the Lancome curling mascara, Courbe Virtuôse - I literally watched as my eyelashes "deflated." $23.50 mascara that promises lashes that curl past 90 degrees for 12 hours, and my lashes do the exact opposite. I even thought I'd then help the mascara out by curling the lashes first, and my lashes still unfurled the curl when I put on the mascara. Having used several different Lancome mascaras previously and liking them, I was shocked at the dismal performance of Courbe Virtuôse. I had even thrown away my receipt thinking that, of course, this Lancome mascara would work. Ok, maybe I wouldn't get crazy curled eyelashes, but I thought they would at least keep a curl. Ah, no such luck, and I'm out $23.50!

Now, I don't think I will make LashBlast waterproof formula my everyday mascara. It really did not give me the blast of lashes I expected. It was also a little too "wet" for me - it went on a little gloppily for my liking, making for somewhat sloppy application. Plus, and this is a big plus, it requires a lot of work to remove it -- many, many cottonballs soaked with eye makeup remover, and I am much too lazy to deal with that every night, especially when I'm exhausted and trying to get to bed. And though I am one who does wash her makeup off every night before going to sleep, I did a little experiment one night while wearing the Lash Blast to see if my lashes would still be curled the next morning, and they were! (Ok, ok, maybe I also didn't feel like dealing with taking off the LashBlast that night). I also noticed that my eyelashes stayed curled (though not as dramatically as with LashBlast) when I used Prescriptives Here To Stay24-Hour Longwear Mascara. And, no, I don't know exactly why or what it is in the waterproof formulas that keep the eyelashes curled, but it works. So now my mission is to find the waterproof mascara that delivers volume and lengthening effects while not adding an additional 5 minutes to my nighttime makeup removal routine! Oh, dream mascara, where are you?!

A Little Extra Protection is A Good Thing

For my recent shore vacation (the "shore" is what we southeast Pennsylvanians and southern New Jerseyans call the "beach") I purchased St. Ives Elements Protective Cleanser with SPF 10. This is a facial cleanser that, when you wash the cleanser off your face, is supposed to leave behind a layer of SPF 10 protection. Pretty cool, huh? Now, some people say this will help them skip a pesky extra step in their morning skincare routine by eliminating the application of SPF. I understand how one could feel this way, but c'mon ladies. SPF 10? From a cleanser you just washed off your face? I mean, really, how much protection can that really give you? Now, I'm not denying that the product does what it says, but we should all know by now that you need a lot higher SPF protection on your delicate face than a 10.My dermatologist said nothing less than 30 would do, and she herself wore, like, 75 (and she was probably late 40's/early 50's and her skin was porcelain-like).

Anyhoo...the cleanser, surprisingly, did not leave behind a greasy film that you might expect. The directions have you massage it into your face for one to two minutes, I guess to make sure the product really adheres to your skin. But it washes off just like any other cleanser. It's hard to believe that anything is truly left behind. I wrote to the company asking how this product worked, and, alas, I was told that "this technology is considered proprietary information". However, even though St. Ives didn't want to divulge their top-secret technology, apparently, someone else found out, because after only one search for "cleanser with SPF," I found out the following info from DailyBeauty:

This SPF 10 source works because it’s encapsulated in a positively-charged silica shell that sticks to the negatively-charged skin, so when the cleanser is rinsed off, the sun protection stays. In addition to protecting against 90% of UVB rays, Protective Cleanser also contains antioxidant vitamin E.

Really, was that soooo top-secret?! Also, this technology is not completely new to the St. Ives cleanser, as freeze 24.7 has a cleanser with SPF 15 called Ice Shield. However, the St. Ives cleanser is much less expensive -- I got it for $3.45 ($1 off coupon, and it was on sale) vs. $48. I, personally, can't see spending $48 for SPF 15 cleanser, but, seems like plenty of others will because Ice Shield is sold out on their website.

Basically, I think this is a good product, works as a cleanser (but do not get it in your eyes - it stings!), but not as your sole means of sun protection. Maybe if you work in an office all day long, eating lunch at your desk, never seeing the light of day, but in general, it's probably best to just use this cleanser as a supplement to your sunscreen routine - I like to think I'm adding yet another layer of protection, giving that sneaky sun one more barrier to have to break through before it can inflict any damage. But also keep in mind, layering SPF 10 under say, SPF 15 foundation does NOT equal SPF 25.

Now I wish I could say I was really dedicated to finding out if this cleanser truly protected, but I have to say I was not at all willing to go outside and offer up my already sun-damaged face to the harmful rays of the sun for research, knowing that I would never go out with a sunscreen that only contained SPF10. Like I said, I'll use this cleanser, but will keep in mind that the SPF10 I'm getting from it is just a little extra insurance, not my only source of protection.

Clearance is Bliss...

Gee, if they only had free shipping, too! Ok, I shouldn't be greedy...

Can She BE More Beautiful?!

Ok, we all know Angelina is gorgeous. Well, except for that moron Donald Trump, but then again, he goes out in public with that hair of his. 'Nuf said. Anyway, when I saw this cover shot of Angie, I was blown away. I think this may be the most beautiful pic I've ever seen of her - though there are many, many incredible ones to choose from. She can't take a bad one. I think maybe I like this one so much because I love big hair, and while I don't like makeup that is heavy and caked-on, I do appreciate her oh-so-glam makeup in this shot. The bold, velvety red lips against the fair skin, and the defined, but not too heavily, eyes. And the pillowy boobs, don't forget them, as if you could. So not fair that someone (who is not me!) can be that gorgeous.

Oh, yeah, I want to read the article, too.
